Basic Packing Tips
- Limit each box to a maximum weight of 50 pounds, but make sure your boxes are firmly packed to prevent items from shifting.
- Wrap items carefully to provide enough cushioning to absorb shock.
- Use sturdy boxes that close.
- Limit items in each carton to items from a single room and label the box to indicate which room it is from.
- Use a notebook with a numbering or coding system to keep an inventory of each box.
- Pack out-of-season or infrequently used items first. Leave things you use daily until last.
- Empty drawers of breakable or spillable items. However, soft, lightweight items may be left in drawers.
- Keep similar items together in a box and keep all parts of things together.
- Wind electrical cords and fasten them.
- Use tissue paper, paper towels, or facial tissue to wrap delicate items. Use newspaper as an outer wrapping.
- Fill in the bottom of the box and empty spaces with crushed paper. Towels, T-shirts, and lightweight blankets may also be used for padding.
- Put the heaviest items in the bottom of the box and build up to the lightest items on top.
- Seal boxes tightly with packing tape.
